Episode #219: Chop Suey: Publishing News and Favorite Fall Things!

Episode #219: Chop Suey: Publishing News and Favorite Fall Things!

Grace and Alvina have an odds and ends episode where they discuss a bunch of publishing news, including the National Book Award longlist, changes at HarperCollins, red states quitting ALA, and an update on the Texas book rating law. They also talk about what they're looking forward to this Fall, and Alison Morris shared book recommendations.

“How have you been?”

Grace has been enjoying all of the things about being back home. Alvina did some “tidying up” (See the Mari Kondo episode #216!) and donated many of her books to clear up some space. She’s getting ready to do a half marathon next weekend! Grace talks about trying to get back to running after you take a break.

Publishing News

  1. Longlist for the 2023 National Book Award for Fiction was announced recently. Drew Berrymore was dropped as their host due to the controversy with her show. Here is the list:

Industry News:

  1. Suzanne Murphy leaves Harper Collins. Liate Stehlik, president and publisher of the Morrow Group, will now also serve as president and publisher of HarperCollins Children’s Books.

  2. Several red states are leaving ALA. How did we get to this place on book banning?

  3. Texas Law HB-900 controversy.

What Autumn things are we looking forward to?

Grace’s favorite season is here and there are no bugs! She is looking forward to sweater weather and wearing the neapolitan ice cream colored sweater that her mother-in-law knit for her last spring! Debbie Michiko Florence and Grace are doing a small book tour together during peak foliage season.

Alvina is looking forward to more fall books coming out!

“What should we be reading?” with Alison Morris:

This is a great series for parents who are reading to their children and may struggle with that or not be used to it.

Grace is grateful that Chinese Menu has hit #6 on the NY Times Bestseller list!

Alvina is grateful about Chinese Menu making all the lists but also that it just made the USA TODAY best seller list!
