“How have you been?”

Grace was busy over the holidays hosting family members and friends! Thankfully they had covid home tests that Alex had purchased weeks ago before they were hard to find. Alex’s family was able to visit from Montreal. They had another Cluckmas: singing chicken and/or duck-themed Christmas carols to their chickens! The new one is based on the song “Last Christmas” by WHAM!:

Last Cluckmas, I gave you my egg.
But the very next day, you ate it away.
So this year, to save me from tears
I’m giving it to a vegan…

Alvina went back to California and visited family and some friends. They took a three night trip to Palm Springs and visited Joshua Tree National Park. Everyone did their best to mask and take covid tests at home. Masks are very effective even for the common cold.

Resolutions!

For starters, the book friends talk about how they did with their resolutions this past year. Last year they tried to use the framework of the Four Tenets of Happiness: social, physical, mental, and spiritual. Some of their resolutions were totally fulfilled but some were not at all. Many were modified and changed. They share their new words for the year (“Build” and “Simplify”) and what their 2022 resolutions are. Just to name a few: Alvina wants to look into fostering children and also create a will. Grace is running more and hoping to get Hazel into more extra-curricular activities.

Fortune Cookie Segment: What was your favorite holiday gift?

Grace received a coo-coo clock and a crio bru machine! Alvina and Stephen decided not to exchange gifts this year but she did give him a silly cat sweatshirt that she then bought one for herself too!

What are you grateful for?

Alvina: Grateful that she was able to fly to California with no Covid cases and no travel issues. Grace: Grateful that she was able to get together with more family and friends this year and there were no Covid cases.

SPECIAL TRIBUTE

The Book Friends were going to have a tribute episode to memorialize all the authors and illustrators we lost in 2021, but instead they decided they will play the recorded tributes at the end of these episodes until Lunar New Year (or whenever they run out of tributes.) The Book Friends would love to hear your memories of these authors and how they touched your life in some way or another. On the bookfriendsforever.com menu, click “Record your author/Illustrator Tribute” and record your memories through Speakpipe. Some of the authors and illustrators we lost: Jerry Pinkney, Tomie DePaola, Beverley Cleary, Lois Ehlert, Eric Carle, Patricia Reilly Giff, Floyd Cooper, and Gary Paulsen. We encourage you to leave a memory and we’ll share it on a special upcoming episode! Thank you!

On this episode, you’ll hear a tribute to Floyd Cooper by author Padma Venkatraman.

Thank you for tuning in!
