Episode #141: Awards! And How to Stay Grounded
Grace and Alvina talk about how Grace found out that she was the recipient of the Children's Literature Legacy Award! They also talk about the other ALA youth media award winners and how to stay grounded after you do win an award.
The Children’s Literature Legacy Award:
The Children's Literature Legacy Award honors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to children's literature through books that demonstrate integrity and respect for all children's lives and experiences.
Congratulations Grace on winning this award!
Grace and Alvina talk about the exciting zoom call that surprised Grace with the announcement that she was winning this Legacy award! This award used to be called the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award. It is part of the ALA media awards that include the distinguished Newbery and Caldecott Award.
How to stay grounded after winning an award:
-Remain grateful and remind yourself that things change, there will always be highs and lows. Grace talked about the imposter syndrome she experienced after learning about the award she won, and how she stays grateful and humble.

The Book Friends were going to have a tribute episode to memorialize all the authors and illustrators we lost in 2021, but instead they decided they will play the recorded tributes at the end of these episodes until Lunar New Year (or whenever they run out of tributes.) The Book Friends would love to hear your memories of these authors and how they touched your life in some way or another. On the bookfriendsforever.com menu, click “Record your author/Illustrator Tribute” and record your memories through Speakpipe. Some of the authors and illustrators we lost: Jerry Pinkney, Tomie DePaola, Beverley Cleary, Lois Ehlert, Eric Carle, Patricia Reilly Giff, Floyd Cooper, and Gary Paulsen. We encourage you to leave a memory and we’ll share it on a special upcoming episode! Thank you!
On this episode, you’ll hear a tribute to Eric Carle by Mitch Cohen.
Other books and media mentioned in this episode:
Thank You!
