Taiwanese Identity

This topic came about based on recent tragedy in the news; the shooting on May 15th in Laguna Woods in Orange County, California in a Taiwanese church. There have been over 200 mass shootings in the US so far. The shooting in the Taiwanese church is interesting to discuss because of what was reported. Alvina’s Aunt and Uncle attended that church earlier that day. Grace and Alvina talk about the Buffalo shooting as well. Who are these people so scared of white people being wiped away? The result of this fear means they will kill people? It doesn’t make any sense. Grace talks about becoming numb to violence and reading Hoot with her daughter. We are all at a loss. How do we turn things around?

Taiwanese identity: The book friends talk about Taiwanese history, Chinese and Taiwanese tensions, and their identity and upbringing. TaiwaneseAmerican.org.

What we been obsessed with recently:

Alvina: 1. The Valet, a movie on Hulu. She loved this light hearted rom-com. 2. Soft throw blankets. Unhide!: vegan blankets.

Grace: Obsessed with the Chinese menu book that she’s working on with Alvina. Also See’s chocolates.

Gratefuls:

Alvina is grateful for impromptu BBQ’s and back patios! Grace is grateful for this place called Aurea’s cake pops! They did an amazing job for Hazel’s birthday party.
