Episode 16: Heirlooms or Souvenirs? And Why We Chose Children's Books.
Alvina calls in from beautiful Greece where she fills us in on how her sabbatical is going!
Grace has been thinking about giving her daughter an heirloom in the form of jewelry someday. This brings up a discussion about heirlooms vs. souvenirs. Since Alvina is traveling, she feels the need to buy a souvenir but pointed out that she likes them to be practical like this giant gorgeous sun hat she bought in South Africa.
She also jokes that maybe she could just take one of these cute cats home that she sees all the time:
For their travels down memory lane in this episode, they talk about the moment when they each decided to become a children’s book author/illustrator and editor. (As opposed to writing and editing books for adults). Both of them always thought the books they read and loved as a child and young adult had the most impact on them in their formative years. Grace mentions that insulting although also quite laughable question they sometimes get, “So when are you going to write a real book?” (meaning a book for adults!)
The end as always with what they’re both feeling grateful for at the moment. Alvina is so grateful for friends to travel with and friends that host while you’re traveling overseas. Grace is grateful for her daughter’s Mouse Scouts book club.
