Episode #228: Envy and FOMO

Episode #228: Envy and FOMO

Welcome back! Grace and Alvina talk about the end of the year and how to try to avoid professional and personal envy and FOMO, but also how to make those feelings work in your advantage.

How have you been?

Grace just returned from NCTE where she was in the company of so many authors it was a fun reunion in many ways! Grace’s family spent Thanksgiving in Saratoga Springs at her sister’s house. She’s getting ready for the Hot Chocolate 5K!

Alvina traveled just for a day to see Stephen’s family for Thanksgiving. She was sick and unable to make her famous apple pie! Alvina did not go to the National Book Awards but congratulations to Dan Santat and his editor Connie Hsu! His book, A First Time for Everything, won the National Book Award.

Envy and FOMO

Grace wanted to talk about envy and FOMO as it is relative to this season of book awards. Grace listened to a podcast with Isabelle Sterling called the Author Burn Out Cure, episode # 95 titled “Navigating Best Books of the Year”. It can be a tough time of year for authors because best books of the year lists are out. There are many emotions and feelings to navigate. Grace also shared the NYT article, “How to Make Envy Work For You”.

Alvina talks about author Windsom Bingham and the DM she received about a jealous/envious author who asked her to stop posting about her accolades. Grace and Alvina talk about some tips and tricks on how to deal with uncomfortable feelings and “return to gratitude”.

Fortune Cookie Segment

Alvina talks about Casey McIntyre’s death and perspective on life.

“Casey’s family is honoring her by anonymously purchasing other people’s medical debt and anonymously forgiving it, via fundraising site RIP Medical Debt. The campaign has surpassed goal after goal after quickly meeting its initial goal of $20,000, and is nearing a new goal of $499,999.”

Please donate if you can already!

Gratefuls

I am grateful to still be alive and doing novel and fun things. Grace is grateful for her sister hosting Thanksgiving. Grace’s nephew decided to have a Dungeons and Dragons game for the whole family. It was a novel experience!
