Episode 27: 20 Years! Mentors and Mentoring
“What advice would you give yourself 20 years ago when you were first starting out as a published author?” Alvina and Grace ask themselves this question as they reflect back on their 20-year anniversary of working in publishing this week.
Grace would tell her younger self to not be so judgmental and quick to critique different types of art work. She mentions after graduating from design school, she only had one metric to judge art by and realized there are so many more! She also wishes there was more focus in the beginning of her career on public speaking. Grace would also tell younger Grace that she should take better care of her health in general…so many all nighters!
Alvina would tell her 20 years ago self that she should not accept the job unless you find out what the salary is and ask for more money! She also wishes her younger self focused on ways to become more organized.
The episode continues on with Grace and Alvina looking back on some of their greatest mentors and also who they have been mentors to. (Grace said that Alvina was one of her greatest mentors!) They also ask each other,
““what was the best piece of advice a mentor ever gave to you?”
Grace: Stop sending your postcards to the art directors, send them to the editors!
Alvina: Try to be more assertive when asking for a raise, however, make it about the work and business, and don’t bring in personal reasons.
Book News! In the end of this episode, Grace and Alvina mention some of their latest book news and recommendations:
As usual, they end with what they’re grateful for today.
