Children's book publishing’s secrets are revealed as we listen in on fascinating, unguarded, insider discussion from two uniquely qualified best friends: award-winning author/illustrator Grace Lin, and one of NYC’s top editors, Alvina Ling. Go behind the scenes of kid lit and catch a glimpse of the lives of the best-selling author and editor, and the relationship between them.

Episode #271: Longevity in the Industry!

Episode #271: Longevity in the Industry!

Grace and Alvina discuss longevity in the publishing industry, both as an author and illustrator and as an editor, using a recent podcast episode and a Publishers Weekly article as a jumping-off point. They discuss the two main qualities authors (and editors!) need to survive in in the industry, and they also discuss how publishing jobs have diminished in the last 30 years, and how to increase your chances of survival. They introduce a new segment called "Tell Me About..." and Alvina talks about ALL THE BOOKS by Hayley and John Rocco. For the Fortune Cookie segment, they talk about the National Book Award finalists and the new MacArthur Foundation Fellows.

How have you been?

Grace went apple picking with her family! In book news, there will be special stenciled edges on the pages of her new book. You can pre-order The Gate, The Girl, and the Dragon now! Her art is also being collected for an upcoming exhibit at the Eric Carle Museum. At work, Alvina had a toast in her office for Peter Brown (author of the Wild Robot, now in theaters!) Kate McKinnon also came to the office to celebrate her new book, The Millicent Quibb School of Etiquette for Young Ladies of Mad Science!

Longevity in the Book Publishing Industry

The book friends have talked about this topic before but there is always more to discuss. Recently, a podcast that Grace listened to has inspired the topic to come up again. It is from Isabel Sterling’s podcast called, The Author Burn Out Cure and the episode “Staying Power in Publishing”. Grace also refers to the Jane Friedman interview here.

Tell me about….(New segment!)

ALvina tell me about the new book!:

Gratefuls

Grace is grateful that she can do some marketing for herself, the Very Asian Book Tour adventure, and the much cooler weather. Alvina is grateful for being healthier and able to run a half-marathon after-all. The book friends are grateful to live in a place without extreme weather and send everyone in the hurricane paths lot’s of love.
