Episode #316: Special Sales with Jenny Mandel!
Grace and Alvina continue their Publishing Curriculum series and welcome special guest Jenny Mandel to talk about her job working in Special Sales. You'll learn all about how she got into publishing and what "special sales" entails. And Jenny also shares the "meet cute" way she met her husband! For the Fortune Cookie segment they talk about what they're looking forward to this Fall, and they end as always with what they're grateful for.
How have you been?
Grace has been working on a deadline to get her work done for a new book of hers. Hazel’s daughter had some friends sleepover in the backyard. They visited Magic Wings to the butterfly sanctuary in Deerfield, MA to learn about the monarch butterflies in their backyard. Alvina watched the West Indian Day Parade. She is working on Fall and Winter 2027 acquisitions. Jenny visited her brother in California.
Special Sales
Jenny talks about how she broke into the publishing industry. Both of her parents were editors for LIFE magazine and her family worked in publishing. Jenny defines “Special Sales'“ for listeners. These are all non-bookstore sales. It could be programs, medical offices, premium sales, or anything needing books to promote their business or organization for giveaways. Propriatary sales where they will customize a book for a retail costumer. It’s anywhere a book could be sold of given away that is not a bookstore. Jenny’s job is to oversee premium sales, proprietary sales, and looks for quirky new markets for their books. For example, Goodnight Pickelball -where could this be sold?
Jenny talks about how she met her husband!
What are you looking forward to about the fall?
Grace is looking forward to finishing her book and enjoying all the beautiful things about the fall. Alvina has two trips coming up in October: one in Corning, NY to run a half-marathon. She is also going to the SCBWI conference in Denver! Jenny is looking forward to an upcoming trip to Italy!
Gratefuls
Alvina is grateful for small coincidences and run-ins! Grace is also grateful that she HAS work even though it’s stressing her out and that school has started for Hazel. She has a great group of friends. Jenny is so grateful that they let their daughters go through some of their old belongings and things that were saved. Check out Formosa Dumpling in Brooklyn!
