Episode 104: Our Relationship with Food!

Episode 104: Our Relationship with Food!

Welcome! On today’s 104th episode, Grace and Alvina are joined by Kidlit Against AAPI Racism Auction winner Christina C. Wu, and they discuss their relationship with food, from childhood to now.

“How have you been?”

Alvina accidentally shattered her laptop display but it will all be fine. It was a reminder that she is trying to do too much at one time. She has dealt with some classic quicksand dreams, she and Stephen went to the Brooklyn Museum again, checked out the KAWS exhibit and later made chicken-fried steak for the first time!

Grace has been very busy painting, creating, and starting to garden.

Fortune Cookie Segment:

Grace and Alvina discuss what’s new in the publishing world! Two topics:

  1. David Pilkey, author of Dogman and Captain Underpants books, withdrew some of his books because of racist content. The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung Fu Cavemen from the Future was pulled.

  2. HarperCollins is purchasing Houghton Mifflin’s trade publishing unit.

Christina C. Wu happened to be on Grace Lin’s website and saw the auction bid item to be a guest on the Book Friends Forever podcast! It seemed like a great opportunity for her to donate to the cause. She donated to #hateisavirus Go Fund Me page.

Christina is a Taiwanese American who grew up in LA and has lived in New York, New Jersey, and then came back to LA a few years ago. She has two kids and they are all huge Grace Lin fans. You can find her on Instagram @empressxtina3.

Our Relationship with Food

The book friends and Christina cover a variety of topics about food and what kind of role it plays in their lives then and now. They discuss food allergies, picky eaters vs foodies, food as it is associated with culture, food and the pandemic, Christina’s favorite: Furikake seasoning, and what seafood means to Alvina after watching the Seaspiracy Netflix show.

  1. Did you get made fun of for bringing certain foods to school?

  2. What were your favorite foods as a kid?

  3. Food allergies! Do you have them? Do your kids have them?

  4. Now as an adult, how has your relationship with food changed over the years?

  5. How has your relationship with food changed over the course of this pandemic year?

  6. What is your favorite food now?

“What are you grateful for?”

Christina is grateful that some of the local restaurants in her area have opened up for indoor dinning. Grace is grateful that Alex received his first dose of the vaccine shot. Alvina remembers Beverly Cleary and is thankful for all of her wonderful books.
