Episode #249: Picture Book text and art editing and revision with Saho Fujii

Grace and Alvina continue their "publishing curriculum" series and welcome special guest Saho Fujii, Executive Art Director, to talk about the picture book editing and revision process. They talk about how picture book illustrators are chosen, Saho shares what she looks for when she reviews sketches, and also shares about her special connection to the late Jerry Pinkney. For the Fortune Cookies segment, they talk about whether they're heavy or light sleepers, and talk about dreams!

How have you been?

Grace is trying to get all of her work done before leaving for some school visits and attending the Highlights Retreat. Please bid on her “Good Fortune” art auction! Her family went to see Cirque Du Soleil in CT! It was part of Hazel’s birthday present. Alvina has been training for a half-marathon and enjoying spring! Saho has been busy selling scarfs and necklaces for her mother at a festival and on Etsy.

Editing and Revising Picture Books

Grace talks about her process when deciding a story is going to be a picture book. Once Upon a Book was the only time the image came before the writing. Alvina and Saho share their process with picture books.

Fortune Cookie Segment: Are you a heavy sleeper or a light sleeper?

Do you remember your dreams? Do you wake easily?

Gratefuls

Alvina is so grateful for spring and cherry blossoms blowing in her backyard! Saho is grateful for her friend’s offering her and her daughter rides because she doesn’t know how to drive. Grace is grateful that Hazel turns 12 this Sunday!
